morrisons to sell 20p paper carrier bags in all stores
Morrisons will sell 20 p paper shopping bags as a replacement for plastic in all stores after a successful trial next month. The supermarket hopes that according to the customer\'s consumption in 8 years, this initiative will save about 1,300 tons of plastic per year. A week-long trial has been conducted in eight stores since January. The Welsh store will be the first store to offer paper shopping bags next week, followed by stores in the UK and Scotland. Retailers say Welsh The carbon footprint of making reusable and ultimately recyclable bags is equivalent to its standard plastic bag, which now costs 20 p. The paper is made from sustainably managed forests, with bags strong enough to deliver groceries weighing 16 kg, Morrisons said. Andy Atkinson, director of customer and marketing at Morrisons group, said: \"We are taking another meaningful step that will remove about 1,300 tons of plastic from the environment every year. \"Our customers tell us that reducing plastic is their most concerned environmental issue, so introducing paper bags nationwide will provide another way to reduce plastic in their lives. \"Morrisons removed 5 p plastic shopping bags in early 2018, which led to a 25% drop in overall bag sales. The 5 p plastic bag tax was introduced in the UK in October 2015, and all large retailers were asked to introduce the fee. There are similar plans for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Government data at the end of 2018 showed that nearly 2 billion plastic bags were sold last fiscal year. This was from 2014 when seven were significantly reduced. 6 billion shipping bags-equivalent to 140 per person-are distributed only by the 7 largest supermarkets in the UK.
